Sigvaris

Since the early 1900’s Sigvaris compression therapy socks and hosiery have revitalized our patients tired, achy and swollen legs. Check out why our athletes, frequent travelers and patients simply desiring daily leg relief are shouting, “It’s the socks!”

Leg Relief for All

Compression therapy is the application of controlled graduated external pressure to the limb to reduce venous pressure within the limb. By doing this, the blood flow velocity is improved and restored to normal. In the early 1990’s Dr. Sheps introduced SIGVARIS compression stockings to his Track and Field patients, who described that their “legs felt lighter” and helped “protect their legs during plane travel”. Many athletes credit their increased performance to “Dr. Sheps Socks” and have been ordering them in bulk ever since.

SIGVARIS compression stockings are part of his treatment protocol for different lower extremity conditions. They are used in combination with our other services to reduce the swelling by aiding the valves in the veins to close which moves blood flow up the leg against the pull of gravity.

Dr. Sheps has pushed the envelope and found new applications for SIGVARIS socks for the treatment of athletics. Because of his history and patient success with the stockings, Dr. Sheps has consulted closely with SIGVARIS for many years on new products for athletic performance.

FAQs

What is Active Therapy?

Athletic Recovery compression socks are designed to improve athletic recovery and performance. They help flush out the lactic acids built up in the leg muscles during exercise, as well as relieve tired, aching legs and exercise-induced muscle soreness. Olympic athletes wore these stockings during the 2008 Olympic games in Beijing, China.

What is Support Therapy?

Support Therapy compression socks and hosiery can be used by the most common person provides relief from a range of common symptoms including tired, aching legs, swollen feet and ankles, as well as spinal stenosis (cramping that you get when you walk). They are highly recommended for: diabetics, pregnant women (promotes blood circulation by improving venous blood return back to the heart), individuals who stand on their legs all day such as nurses or cashiers, frequent plane travelers (prophylactic treatment for preventing Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) varicosities and tired legs), and post-surgical care (even if the surgery is nowhere near the feet).

How does graduated compression therapy help with the management of venous problems?

As a person walks, the contraction and relaxation of the calf muscles around the veins aid in moving blood toward the heart. The external graduated compression of SIGVARIS socks and stockings act as a layer of muscle by gently squeezing the stretched vein walls together, allowing the valves to close. The cavity of the vein is reduced, thereby restoring blood flow to a normal state and aiding overall circulation.

To be most effective, the socks or stockings should be put on at the start of your day and removed before you go to bed. Some people have an inherited weakness of the vein walls or valves which creates additional challenges to venous return. Wearing SIGVARIS graduated compression socks or stockings is vital for the prevention and treatment of varicose veins and other circulatory problems.

What Are Venous Disorders?

Venous insufficiency is caused by a series of disorders in the vein including when the valves of the veins fail to function properly. This interferes with venous return and causes blood to pool in the veins. Venous insufficiency can become more chronic and lead to spider veins, varicose veins, phlebitis, blood clots, and changes in the skin. The most serious disorder is a venous leg ulcer. Chronic Venous Disorders (CVD) is a collective term used to describe a long-standing condition involving impaired venous return in varying degrees of severity.

According to the Vascular Disease Foundation, "A large U.S. survey, the Framingham study, reported that 27 percent of the American adult population had some form of venous disease in their legs. It is estimated that at least 20 to 25 million Americans have varicose veins."

Symptoms of CVD include:

  • Thermal & odor control
  • Edema (swelling)
  • Feeling of heaviness in the legs
  • Pain or cramps in the calves
  • Skin discolorations
  • Dermatitis (skin problems)
  • Dry or weeping eczema
  • Venous leg ulcer
  • Visible Veins

A feeling of discomfort in your legs may be a sign of an underlying venous disorder. These symptoms include tired and achy legs. You may experience them especially when sitting or standing for prolonged hours.

Ask Dr. Sheps about Venous Disorders so he can help determine your underlying condition and determine the correct treatment for you.
