Herniated Discs

Intervertebral discs are ‘cushion-like’ structures that are found in between your vertebrae (i.e. the bones that make up the spine). These discs protect the vertebrae from pressing against each other. A herniated disc (also referred to as a “slipped disc” or “ruptured disc”) occurs when one of the discs begins pressing against a nerve. The pain that accompanies a herniated disc is often felt in the lower back; however, the pain may also extend to your upper and lower extremities.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain in the lower back and/or in the upper and lower extremities (i.e. arms and legs)

  • Numbness

  • Muscle weakness
