Shockwave Therapy
What is shockwave therapy?
Shockwave therapy (also known as “Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology” and abbreviated as “EPAT” or “ESWT”) is a safe and noninvasive therapy that can help improve the healing process for various musculoskeletal conditions.
Shockwave therapy utilizes two different application devices, one that releases radial pressure waves and one that releases focused shockwaves. The two devices work in tandem to improve the rate of healing by boosting the metabolism and increasing blood circulation.
It is important to note that EPAT treatment is not currently approved for patients with the following health conditions:
Malignancies
Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)
Pregnancy
What conditions can be treated with shockwave therapy?
Dr. Sheps often uses EPAT to treat patients with plantar fasciitis. However, he may also recommend this therapy for patients with injuries or conditions that affect the following areas:
Neck
Shoulder
Back and chest
Upper extremity
Lower extremity
Foot and ankle (including plantar fasciitis)
Myofascial trigger points
What can I expect from shockwave therapy treatment?
Acute conditions typically require 4-6 treatment sessions, while more chronic conditions may require a longer treatment plan.
You may experience some discomfort after treatment. You may also feel residual pain following a return to regular activity. Neither should be cause for concern, but be sure to let Dr. Sheps know that you are still experiencing symptoms. He will adjust the course of treatment, if necessary.
*Individual results of treatment may vary.
