What is Chiropratic Care?

Chiropractic manipulation (or “chiropractic adjustment”) is a safe and noninvasive therapy that focuses on disorders of the musculoskeletal system (especially the spine) and the nervous system, and the effects of these disorders on general health. Doctors of chiropractic—often referred to as DCs, chiropractors or chiropractic physicians—practice a drug-free, hands-on approach to health care that includes patient examination, diagnosis and treatment.

In addition to their expertise in spinal manipulation/adjustment, doctors of chiropractic have broad diagnostic skills and are also trained to recommend therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as to provide nutritional, dietary and lifestyle counseling.

During treatment, Dr. Sheps, D.C. will apply gentle pressure to realign your joints; this technique helps to reduce inflammation and improve circulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some frequently asked questions about Los Angeles chiropractic care.

Make an appointment with Dr. Sheps if your pain doesn’t improve with at-home treatments like ice, rest, and activity changes. That’s especially true if your pain gets worse and affects your ability to work or do other routine activities. Chiropractors like Dr. Sheps use manual therapies and other conservative treatments.

Chiropractic care is for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions. DCs are especially well known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches with their highly skilled manipulations, or chiropractic adjustments. They also care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints.

These painful conditions often involve or impact the nervous system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury. The benefits of chiropractic care extend to general health issues, as well, since our body structure affects our overall function. DCs also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification. We are utilizing emerging medical technologies to treat conditions within the chiropractic scope of practice.

Dr. Sheps treats various health problems with chiropractic care, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Back pain
  • Neck pain
  • Sciatica
  • Neuropathy
  • Stiff muscles and muscle aches
  • Frequent headaches
  • Pregnancy symptoms

Chiropractic care provides a safe, noninvasive treatment for trauma suffered in car accidents, sports injuries, and the like.

Yes. Chiropractic care and spinal adjustment refer to the same thing. It’s a noninvasive procedure that involves Dr. Sheps using his hands and hand-held tools to manipulate your vertebrae, joints, and soft tissues. Applying varying pressure to the tissues in your spine improves their alignment, relieves pain, and promotes healing.

Chiropractic care is widely recognized as one of the safest drug-free, non-invasive therapies available for the treatment of neuromusculoskeletal complaints.

Although chiropractic care has an excellent safety record, no health treatment is completely free of potential adverse effects. The risks associated with chiropractic, however, are very small. Many patients feel immediate relief following chiropractic treatment, but some may experience mild soreness or aching, just as they do after some forms of exercise. Current literature shows that minor discomfort or soreness following spinal manipulation typically fades within 24 hours.

Key Benefits:

  • Safe and non-invasive treatment option
  • Drug-free approach to pain relief
  • Effective for back, neck, and joint issues
  • Highly trained, licensed professionals
  • Minimal and short-lived side effects

Consider chiropractic care if you suffer from musculoskeletal pain or mobility problems and your symptoms don’t improve with rest, ice, and over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication. Since chiropractic care is noninvasive, it presents few risks. It effectively manages acute and chronic pain so that you feel better and can return to your routine.

Chiropractic care is one of the safest non-invasive methods, and presents few risks. It’s normal to experience mild soreness and stiffness after each visit, similar to how you’d feel after an intense workout. These symptoms usually improve within a day or two. If they continue or get worse, let Dr. Sheps, D.C. know.

The hands-on nature of the chiropractic treatment is essentially what requires patients to visit the chiropractor a number of times. To be treated by a chiropractor, a patient needs to be in his or her office. In contrast, a course of treatment from medical doctors often involves a pre-established plan that is conducted at home (i.e. taking a course of antibiotics once a day for a couple of weeks). A chiropractor may provide acute, chronic, and/or preventive care thus making a certain number of visits sometimes necessary. Your doctor of chiropractic should tell you upfront the extent of treatment recommended and how long you can expect it to last.

You may experience mild soreness or stiffness after a chiropractic adjustment. This is normal, and any residual discomfort should resolve within a day or two of your visit. If, for whatever reason, the discomfort continues or worsens, be sure to let Dr. Sheps know immediately.
